In June 1816, a French navy frigate became stranded on a sandbar near Senegal. Unable to refloat the ship, the crew was forced to abandon it. With insufficient boats for everyone, a makeshift raft was constructed to carry 147 people, including soldiers, sailors, officers, and passengers. The plan involved the boats towing the raft, but disaster struck when the towing cable snapped, leaving the raft adrift in the vast ocean. A desperate fight for survival then began for those stranded at sea.
