Maxine waits impatiently for Kenny, who is soon called away by Captain McGovern on police business. He joins Detective Deever and Lieutenant Bixler to investigate the murder of a circus performer, a case he soon helps crack by arresting a jealous knife-thrower. To keep his date with Maxine, the captain orders Kenny to pick up Texas Buck Moseby at the jail and take him to the penitentiary by train. The burglary case rapidly becomes the next focal point for the force.

Maxine and Effie plan a wedding for noon at the mayor's office, but Kenny is late as usual. The captain arrives and boasts that Kenny has nabbed the burglar, Stanley. Maxine calls off the wedding, frustrated by the chaos surrounding the case and delays in Kenny's availability.

Stanley insists he was forced to participate in the robbery by another man, casting doubt on his guilt. Kenny discovers new evidence that might clear Stanley, but his orders are to transport Stanley to the prison by train. Tensions rise as the police debate the proper course of action for the suspect.
