The film recounts Switzerland’s origin in a comic, parodic style, casting William Tell as an unwilling national hero caught in court intrigues, blunders and over‑zealous patriotism. Habsburg occupiers and bumbling Swabian tourists impede the Confederates’ fight for independence, while a farcical assault forces the patriots to confront their history and retreat to their own borders.
