Centuries ago, a drop of sunlight births a healing flower with magical properties. Gothel uses the flower’s power to stay young for generations. Soldiers from the Kingdom of Corona steal the flower to heal their ill, pregnant queen. The queen gives birth to Rapunzel, whose hair carries the flower’s magic.

Gothel sneaks into Corona Castle and cuts a lock from Rapunzel's hair, intending to steal its magic. The cut strand loses its power, signaling Gothel's hold on Rapunzel. Rapunzel is abducted and raised in a hidden tower where she remains cut off from the outside world.

Each year on Rapunzel's birthday, the king and queen release sky lanterns hoping to guide Rapunzel home. The lanterns fuel Rapunzel's curiosity about the world beyond the tower. Her longing grows as the years pass.

On her eighteenth birthday, Rapunzel asks to leave the tower to investigate the lanterns. Gothel refuses, claiming the outside world is too dangerous. To go out anyway, Rapunzel hatches a ruse: she asks Gothel for a 'gift' of painting supplies that will supposedly justify a three-day journey.

Flynn Rider steals the crown from the palace and is chased by the royal guards and Maximus. He takes refuge in Rapunzel's tower after Rapunzel knocks him out. He becomes entangled in Rapunzel's plan to see the lanterns.

Rapunzel agrees to help Flynn return the crown in exchange for an outing to see the lanterns. Flynn accepts, and they leave the tower together, stepping into the outside world for the first time in Rapunzel's life. Their journey marks the start of their growing bond.

Rapunzel and Flynn visit the Snuggly Duckling pub, where rough-looking patrons reveal their softer sides under Rapunzel's charm. The knights and Maximus pursue them, but the thugs end up helping them escape. The encounter exposes Rapunzel to the kingdom's life beyond the tower.

The pair are trapped in a fast-flooding cave and fear suffocation. Flynn reveals his real name, Eugene Fitzherbert, in a moment of trust. Rapunzel uses her glowing hair to reveal a hidden underwater exit, and they escape.

Gothel returns to the tower, finds Flynn's satchel and a wanted poster of Eugene. She tracks down the Stabbington brothers and strikes a deal to help find Rapunzel. Gothel plans to use Rapunzel to test Eugene's loyalty.

Rapunzel and Eugene step into Corona to attend a festival celebrating the 'lost princess'. After a day of celebration, they sail on the lake to watch the lanterns rise. Eugene gives Rapunzel the crown, and they confess their love for each other.

The Stabbington brothers corner Eugene and tie him up, hoping to force Rapunzel to abandon him. They threaten to capture Rapunzel, but Gothel arrives and stages a rescue, taking Rapunzel back to the tower. The betrayal marks a turning point in Rapunzel's freedom struggle.

Eugene is arrested, but Maximus and the pub thugs help him escape. He remains determined to rescue Rapunzel and clear his name. Rapunzel's resolve to free herself grows stronger.

Rapunzel discovers she has subconsciously painted the kingdom's sun symbol in her artwork, revealing her true identity as the lost princess. She rebels against Gothel and confronts her tower. This revelation anchors her resolve to reclaim her freedom.

Rapunzel refuses to be kept captive, and Eugene arrives to help. Gothel stabs Eugene to test Rapunzel's loyalty, then ages rapidly after Rapunzel cuts off her hair to prevent healing. Gothel falls from the tower and dies, while Eugene is revived by Rapunzel's tear.

Rapunzel and Eugene return to Corona, where she reunites with her birth parents. Eugene is pardoned for his crimes, and the two heroes celebrate their reunion before marrying.
