Sweet Coetzee is celebrated in South Africa for 20 years of service as a sportscaster, on the occasion of his 40th birthday, where he narrowly beats his rival, pompous George Weedle. The party milestones quickly sour when a drunken Sweet misses a live sportscast and his boss, Bryce Williams, demotes him to interviewer while promoting Weedle. What follows reveals a man who is shaping up to be unreliable and reckless, openly bragging about his girlfriend, Sandy — a line that hints at the cruder, more self-destructive impulses under the surface. > “the best bum in the business” becomes a shorthand for his blunt sense of entitlement and the tabloids’ gaze that follows him.

Alongside Sweet’s professional decline runs a comic subplot about two bumbling robbers, Bossy and Savage, who remain mostly offscreen to the main characters yet pepper the film with their own schemes. The tension between Sweet and Weedle intensifies when Sweet hatches a prank during a golf game and earns a six‑month suspension, a setback that only feeds his temper and impulsive streak. In a separate sting, Sweet records Weedle in a no‑holding‑back moment with a prostitute, the incident titled by the film as “The Orphan in a Storm”, a scandal that multiplies the stakes and gives the story its morally murky edge.

Seeking refuge from his humiliation, Sweet drifts toward the casino where his luck and his larcenous pattern collide. There he befriends a young boy, Alfred Alfred Short, whom he tries to charm by posing as a genie, a moment that reveals Sweet’s penchant for manipulation and mischief. The casino scene spirals into chaos as Bossy and Savage attempt a robbery that goes awry when a disco ball shatters, knocking Sweet unconscious at the moment of a big jackpot win. The sudden crash of his fortunes mirrors the sudden turn his life is about to take.

Sweet slips into a coma as South Africa undergoes radical political change — a transition from apartheid to democracy that frames the story with a sharp political backdrop. Meanwhile, Alfred Short becomes a more prominent presence, visiting Sweet in the hospital and then absconding with him, helping him escape as Bossy and Savage loot the wages. The escape ultimately lands them at Doc’s house, where Sweet’s memory starts to fail him; he cannot recall his old life, but the new world outside his hospital bed is unrecognizable, filled with a country in flux and a rugby culture that has its own ironies. At a rugby match, Weedle has become the commentator, a role reversal that emphasizes how much the world has shifted since Sweet’s fall from grace.

As Sweet and Short realize they are both on the run for the money Shorty obtained, they travel into the Transvaal, where the country remains divided by lingering prejudice and social divisions. Sweet even adopts a Rastafarian disguise as he and Short move through a landscape still marked by racial divides, a travelogue that underscores the stubborn realities of the region. A chance encounter at a slot machine triggers a memory flash, and Sweet begins to remember aspects of his former life. He returns to Sandy’s world, reconnecting with her as well as Shorty, and the trio attempts to regain control of the situation.

The plot thickens when Sweet remembers Weedle’s theft of his jackpot and the incriminating tape of Weedle’s affair. A deal is struck: if the Cowboys win against the Makulu, Weedle will publicly return the winnings; if not, Sweet must destroy all copies of the tape and disappear from Weedle’s life. With Sandy and Alfred Short at his side, Sweet orchestrates a plan to undermine the Cowboys by sabotaging their performance. He dons a paramedic disguise to disrupt the players, and the plan seems to work—until the game reaches a fever pitch and chaos erupts again.

During the crescendo of the rugby match, Sweet experiences another head injury and a fresh bout of amnesia, briefly believing himself to be a Cowboy named Raymond. He almost helps the team seal a victory, but a cascade of pranks from Bossy and Savage sends a trophy soaring and knocks him out cold, unwittingly sealing his jackpot comeback. When he awakens, the film pulls back to reveal that the earlier disco ball incident and much of the action may have been a dream. The final beat is a warm, almost whimsical confession: Sweet tells Shorty and Sandy that he loves them both and that, yes, he had “a hell of a dream.” The movie closes on a note that blends relief, humor, and a hint of reconciled romance, leaving Sweet and his circle to face a future that is finally their own to shape.
