Terry, Sylvia, and Junior travel from Arizona to Malibu for a beach vacation, hoping to learn how to surf and to reconnect with Skeet, the Big Kahuna. The trip sets up the romantic entanglements that drive the story. They arrive at the famous Malibu setting to begin their summer adventures.

Terry falls in love with Len, the operator of a local surf shop. Their budding romance begins as the group starts learning to surf and exploring the Malibu scene.

Junior falls for Milo, a new surfer they meet at Casey's Surfer, the hangout on the pier. Milo's arrival adds a new dynamic to the group’s relationships as they settle into the surfing lifestyle.

Sylvia falls in love with Skeet, Malibu's Big Kahuna. Skeet is a former football star whose career was ended by a skull injury, which influences his reputation in the surfing community.

Milo leads the girls to Casey's Surfer, the hangout on the pier, where surfers gather. Milo is initially kept out because he is a 'gremmie', highlighting the social divide within the surfing crowd.
