Bill and Quinn Brody are legendary storm chasers. When they have a child, William, Quinn decides to stay home and monitor the situations instead of chasing. This marks a quieter family life before storms return.

During a storm chase, Quinn pleads with Bill to exit the dangerous 'bear cage' as the system explodes. He ignores her warning, and the tornado kills Bill and the two college students. The tragedy reshapes the family's future and pushes Quinn to hold the line at home.

Several years pass and Quinn works as a house cleaner in Florida, supported by her teenage son William. Harper becomes a close friend and helps teach him to drive. William remains drawn to storm chasing, even as Quinn worries about the risks.

William takes his parents' tornado frequency instrument to the roof of his high school during a thunderstorm. The device attracts trouble and he is expelled from school. The incident shows how deeply William's obsession runs in spite of his mother's caution.

William receives his dad's chase log in the mail from Roy Cameron, a former chase partner. He hitchhikes to Texas to the return address on the envelope and meets Roy there. Roy initially wants to send him home but ultimately agrees to let him tag along on a chase.

Roy works for Brody Storm Chase Tours, run by the blunt Zane Rogers who uses the legendary Brody name to draw clients. He grudgingly allows William to accompany the other tourists. William proves to be a risk‑taker, earning a wary trust from Roy and Zane.

During a chase near a forming supercell, the group stops in a muddy field where a tornado forms in the distance. The van becomes stuck in the mud, forcing Roy to head to a garage hours away to fetch their back‑up vehicle. The delay puts the team at greater risk and heightens the tension of the chase.

Roy returns with the back‑up van and, with Zane, leaves William behind at a gas station as a nearby supercell looms. A tornado forms directly over the gas station, and William rides it out in a phone booth. He survives the surreal moment and proves his resolve to chase storms.

A press crew arrives to interview William, and Zane tries to use the moment to promote his tours. Roy punches Zane and quits the operation. William and Roy head to a warehouse where William shows Roy the tornado frequency instrument; Roy shares memories of his late father’s original chase vehicle.

The night brings a stunning lightning display as the storm lights up the sky. The spectacle reinforces the thrill and danger of storm chasing. William's passion grows even as the risk remains.

At the diner the next morning, the chase crews gather and Roy tells William his mom is coming to pick him up, so he should stay put. The moment tests William's resolve as he weighs safety against the thrill of the chase.

William slips away to join Zane and his latest tourists as they head toward a large incoming supercell. The group pushes forward into the storm, and William's driving is put to the test as the tornado closes in. Pressure mounts as the crew races toward shelter.

With another tornado bearing down, the group divides: some dive into an underground shelter while William heads back to the van to retrieve his father's chase log. The van is swept into a nearby pool, and the team survives underwater, clinging to safety. They emerge shaken but alive as the storm passes.

In the aftermath, William and Harper confess their feelings for each other. Quinn expresses pride in William and in the legacy of his father. The van is fished out of the pool, signaling a fragile but hopeful end to a turbulent chase.
