Met audiences have erupted for Karita Mattila’s electrifying portrayal of Salome, a performance that ranks among the most compelling of her generation. Mattila fully embodies Oscar Wilde’s tempest‑tossed, willful and sensual heroine, while Strauss’s pioneering score amplifies the decadent mood and heightens the erotic tension. Even after more than a century, the production retains the shock it caused at its 1905 premiere.
