Compton’s autobiographical debut, Stranded (1965), was written, directed, starred in, self‑financed and distributed by her. Inspired by the French New Wave, it mixes beatnik culture with progressive depictions of female independence, sexuality and homosexuality. The story tracks Raina, an American in Greece with lover Gary Collins and friend Gian Pietro Calasso, as she pursues affairs and rejects marriage without judgment.
