Stone of Destiny

In 1950, Ian Hamilton is a fervent member of the Scottish Covenant Association who longs for an independent Scotland and grows tired of the complacency he sees around him. He envisions a bold moment that could focus national sentiment and spark the movement into a new era, a spark aimed at shifting the country toward its own future. After Parliament rejects a petition for Scottish home rule, he hatches a dramatic plan with his friend, Bill Craig: retrieve the Stone of Destiny from Westminster Abbey in London, a relic that has stood at the heart of Scotland’s story since it was seized by King Edward I in the Middle Ages.

Craig is cautious about the legal consequences and the toll on his personal life, so he ultimately pulls back. Undeterred, Hamilton presses on and seeks support from John MacCormick, a prominent campaigner for Scottish devolution. MacCormick initially resists the request for a mere £50, but the idea lingers, and he slowly moves toward backing the venture. At a party, MacCormick introduces Hamilton to Kay Matheson, a young woman with equally fierce nationalist convictions who becomes central to the mission.

Matheson brings Hamilton to Gavin Vernon, a strong, charismatic student, and Vernon brings along his quiet friend Alan Stuart. Though Hamilton worries about bringing in one more person, Vernon convinces him that Stuart and his car will be valuable assets. The group agrees to attempt the theft on Christmas Eve, when London’s attention is diverted by holiday celebrations.

The four travelers reach London a day early and adjust their plan accordingly. They nearly get caught when Hamilton is mistaken for a homeless man by a watchman, the moment briefly forcing him into a narrow escape before he’s released. The night grows tense as [Kay Matheson] falls ill with a fever, and Hamilton escorts her to a bed-and-breakfast to recover. The landlady, Mrs. McQuarry, grows suspicious of their Scottish accents and strange behavior, and when Hamilton returns for Matheson at 2:00 A.M., she phones the police. Yet the quartet slips away, narrowly avoiding arrest while the city sleeps.

That same night, Hamilton, Vernon, and Stuart break into Westminster Abbey and lift the Stone of Scone, a heist that ends with the stone cracking in two during the removal. They drive north, hiding the larger piece in a field near the Scottish border. Back in Glasgow, the wave of nationalist celebrations follows the news of the theft, but the group learns that the stone could be permanently damaged if left exposed to the elements. So they return to the field and enlist help from a Romani camp—one member, known as the Gypsy in the cast—who assists in safeguarding and eventually reuniting the two pieces.

Once the stone is stabilized, the plan shifts toward a symbolic return to the authorities at Arbroath Abbey, the site of the Declaration of Arbroath. The police intervene, and the students are arrested; however, they are never prosecuted. The Stone of Scone is transported back to London, where it stayed until 1996, when it was moved to Edinburgh Castle “on loan,” with an understanding that it would be returned to Westminster Abbey for the next coronation.
