Steamboat Round the Bend

In the vibrant setting of the 1890s Mississippi River, a colorful cast of characters embarks on a series of daring adventures centered around steamboats, justice, and unlikely heroism. The story follows [Doctor John Pearly], a charming yet eccentric man who sells Pocahontas patent medicine, mostly consisting of alcohol, while dreaming of a peaceful retirement cruising the river. To pursue this peaceful life, he acquires a neglected paddleboat steamer, intending to spend his later years leisurely navigating the waterways with his nephew [[Duke]] and later discovering a young girl named [[Fleety Belle]].

Duke, played by a young, eager crewman, arrives with Fleety Belle, an uneducated girl with a troubled past. She confides in Pearly about a man who had threatened her, which led Duke to believe she acted in self-defense. Encouraged by [Will Rogers], Pearly convinces Duke to surrender to the local sheriff, [Sheriff Rufe Jeffers], who is portrayed as a kind-hearted and good-natured man. Sheriff Jeffers is generous and tries to make Duke comfortable in jail, even entertaining prisoners with musical saw performances. Meanwhile, Pearly isn’t entirely at ease with Fleety Belle’s presence, but their relationship warms when her cruel father arrives, attempting to reclaim her with threats and whip lashes. Pearly swiftly intervenes, scaring him off with a carving knife, and from that point on, the two develop a bond rooted in trust.

The story takes a humorous turn as Pearly’s floating wax museum—consisting of old mannequins from a bankrupt collection—becomes a key resource when Pearly raises the $500 needed for Duke’s appeal. In a lively and resourceful scene, the crew uses the mannequins to scare off a threatening mob, demonstrating their quick thinking. Unfortunately, Duke’s appeal is denied, and he is scheduled to be executed in Baton Rouge. Before his transfer, he and Fleety Belle marry in a jailhouse ceremony, where the phrase “Till Death Do You Part” carries a double meaning, hinting at both the solemn vow and the peril of their fate.

Determined to find a way to prove Duke’s innocence, Pearly learns about a witness—an anti-Demon Rum preacher named [New Moses]—who can clear his nephew. However, Moses is elusive and itinerant, leaving Pearly with no choice but to head to Baton Rouge directly. To get the break he needs, Pearly enters a steamboat race, with the hope of catching the Governor’s attention, as the winner would secure an audience with the highest official. This leads to a lively and chaotic race where traditional rivals, including seasoned Captain [Eli], are betting boats and competing fiercely.

Mid-race, Pearly spots [[New Moses]] holding a revival meeting on the riverbank. In a daring and humorous rescue, Pearly lassos Moses, pulling him into the boat amid cheers and chaos. Moses joins the crew upon learning of their mission, bringing his fiery preacher energy to the journey. As the race progresses, Pearly’s boat faces challenges—when running low on fuel, the crew cleverly cannibalizes a wooden ship, foreshadowing a scene of inventive resourcefulness. Notably, Moses finds Pearly’s liquor tonic—a key plot element—and throws it into the fire, which results in the boat’s sudden surge in power, driven by the alcohol. The race becomes a lively spectacle, with the boat surging towards the finish line in spectacular fashion.

The climax culminates just as Pearly and the officials arrive in Baton Rouge, with the hanging of Duke delayed to allow him to watch the race. Miraculously, Pearly’s quick thinking and the unexpected boost from the liquor tonic enable them to reach the prison in the nick of time, securing Duke’s freedom. Throughout this adventure filled with humor, daring, and twists, the story emphasizes themes of loyalty, quick wit, and the lengths one will go to seek justice and protect loved ones.
