Scott declares he intends to kill himself and says goodbye to his friends and relatives, planning to shoot the moment with his camera. This chilling confession sets the tone for the group's increasingly desperate plans and foreshadows the violence to come.

At school, he tells his five best friends Brian, Rick, Patrick, Trudi, and Sandy about his plan. They initially try to reassure him, but they eventually decide to join him, buying cameras for everyone and planning to upload their complete videos to a website.

Patrick occasionally films Tyrone Johnson, a local bully, with his girlfriend. Tyrone confronts him and beats him for filming, illustrating the peril and anger surrounding the group.

Patrick begins a plan to kill students who irritate him and films a video listing the names of those he intends to kill. The list is found by one of the boys and shown to the others, provoking outrage; Sandy and Trudi tell him he is losing it, while Patrick insists it was a joke.

Sandy and Scott slowly fall in love, while Trudi and Brian become close friends. These budding relationships develop under the shadow of the planned deaths, adding emotional stakes to the group's decisions.

Before the joint suicide, Patrick creates a tape showing him raping and killing an innocent little girl in a supermarket. The tape later surfaces, creating further moral outrage within the circle.

Scott finds Patrick's tape and shows it to the others. Sandy calls him a murderer, and the group decides not to tell anyone about the video, instead storing it as 'State's Evidence' on a camera.

They arrange to meet at school at a designated time and go to sleep in the same place, signaling the collective plan to end their lives together. The arrangement underscores the group’s descent into despair.

Patrick and Rick wake up early and go to the school. Patrick loads his gun and tells Rick to film everything, setting the stage for the attack.

Patrick bursts into the hall and starts shooting, while others rush to the corridor and witness the carnage. Scott hurries to stop Patrick, offers Tyrone to take him instead, but Patrick injures Scott and then kills Tyrone, with Rick still filming.

Patrick takes the camera to a science room and declares on film that the killings were not random, aiming to attract the attention of the American people. He then shoots himself in the head, ending his rampage.

Scott finally admits that the plan was born from pure boredom and a desire to live before dying. Police arrive, find both boys dead, and switch off the camera.

The film ends with Scott's mother crying near the TV set, confronting the tragedy that has unfolded. Her tears reflect the sorrow and impact on those left behind.
