Sam and his dog Buddha share a quiet moment under the night sky as a shooting star crosses the heavens. Sam makes a wish that he could touch the Moon, planting the film's central goal. This moment foreshadows the space adventure to come.

Field trip day to Vision Enterprises

The class travels to Vision Enterprises to watch a test launch of Vision 1. Pets are not allowed, so Sam must leave Buddha at home.

Buddha and siblings sneak aboard

Buddha reunites with his siblings Rosebud, Budderball, B-Dawg, and Mudbud and convinces them to come along. They hide in the school bus, slip into a space suit machine, and don tiny spacesuits before following the students. The dogs manage to board the Space Shuttle Vision 1.

Mission Control's Pi confirms the team is ready for launch and signals the shuttle to proceed. The dogs are sealed inside the shuttle as preparations finish and the countdown begins.

Astro pilots the Vision 1 from Earth and initiates the launch. The shuttle climbs away from Earth and begins its voyage into space while the dogs observe their surroundings through portholes.

Docking with the R.R.S.S. and meeting Spudnick

Vision 1 docks with the Russian Research Space Station and the dogs explore the station's corridors. They meet Spudnick, a dog under Yuri's care, who greets them warmly. Yuri reveals he wants to stay in space for the moment but longs to return home.

Fuel hose connection and escape attempt

Yuri connects the fuel hose to Vision 1, but a leak appears as tensions rise aboard. The pups, along with Spudnick, hurry back to the shuttle to avoid disaster as alarms blare.

An explosion erupts when sparks hit the leaking fuel, and the dogs escape as the R.R.S.S. begins to fail. Yuri barely escapes using the Cosmopod as the station erupts behind them.

On the Moon, the dogs meet Gravity, a ferret who serves as their mission control assistant. Their only communication is audio, so they don't initially realize Gravity's true species. Gravity directs them to return to Vision 1.

Returning to Earth, Dr. Finkel manipulates the path, turning the course into a meteor shower. The ship's auto-avoidance system fights the onslaught, while Budderball performs a space walk to repair the antenna after it is damaged.

Back on Earth, Sam accuses Dr. Finkel of altering the path. Pi reviews security footage and confirms Finkel was at his desk at 7:49 pm, leading to his removal by security.
