Something in the Water

While driving home from a date, Meg and Kayla are confronted by a group of thugs who hurl homophobic slurs. Kayla retaliates by throwing double middle fingers, which provokes a brutal assault. Meg is knocked unconscious as the attackers leave them battered and shaken.

One year later, Meg travels to the West Indies to join her friends Lizzie, Cam, and Ruth in celebrating Lizzie's wedding to Dominic. The mood is tense because Kayla is also present, and Meg hasn't seen her since the attack. The reunion is strained as unresolved histories linger over the celebration.

Cam hires a boat to take the group to a secluded island several miles from the resort. Meg and Kayla are dropped on a beach to talk while Cam, Lizzie, and Ruth drive to another part of the island. The atmosphere remains uneasy as old wounds resurface.

While swimming, Ruth is bitten on the leg by a shark. She bleeds heavily, prompting the group to haul her onto the boat and head back toward the shore. The emergency escalates as they confront a life-threatening injury.

The hired boat leaks after hitting reefs and sinks, leaving the survivors miles from land. They improvise with the single life jacket to support Ruth. Lizzie reveals she cannot swim and clings to a buoy for safety.

Ruth bleeds to death and the group reluctantly allows her to be taken by the shark. With Ruth gone, Kayla decides to swim for help. The sharks circle closer, heightening the sense of imminent danger.

Kayla swims off to seek help from potential rescuers. Before she goes, Lizzie and Cam reveal to Meg that Kayla had planned to propose to her on the night of the attack. In the midst of the peril, Cam is attacked and eaten by the shark.

Night falls as a large yacht speeds by without spotting Meg and Lizzie on the buoy. Meg and Lizzie cling to each other, sharing their fears and Meg's trauma. A storm brews, and the buoy is knocked away by the increasingly rough sea.

Meg wakes in the morning to find herself alone, the life jacket still on and Lizzie having sacrificed herself to give Meg a chance. She processes the trauma of what they've endured and prepares for the next trial. The sea remains dangerous, but a glimmer of hope persists.

Kayla arrives in a rescue boat just in time to save Meg from the sharks. The two women decide to go home together, united by a shared trauma. They resolve to tell Dominic that Lizzie is dead and head toward a hopeful reunion.
