Set during the WWII siege of Leningrad, Lopushansky’s second film follows a few crucial hours in the life of a soloist as the city’s philharmonic prepares to play Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony for a broadcast to England. Starving and frail like his fellow musicians, the soloist doubts whether his weakened body can deliver a proper performance.
