After WWII, 4,000 displaced Polish families—including Jews, fascists and anti‑communists—are placed in a government hostel where men and women live in separate barracks while they work off their passage. Married Julian, a father, falls for fellow immigrant Nina, forcing him to choose between duty and love as they confront prejudice, adapt to Australian culture, and wrestle with the pull of old‑world values.
