Inspired by Flaubert’s *Madame Bovary*, Sokurov’s *Save and Protect* charts Emma’s downfall—her affairs with aristocrat Rodolphe and student Leon, and the humiliation after her husband botches a club‑foot operation. By omitting a precise period, the film blends 1840s atmosphere with modern touches such as an automobile and a distant “When the Saints Go Marching In,” highlighting the timeless clash of soul and flesh. Sokurov emphasizes sensual detail, showing both passionate intensity and quiet, intimate moments from a woman’s perspective.
