Maharaja Arunangshu, the ruler of the princely state of Balabantpur, leaves behind a deathbed wish list that governs the succession. The first condition forbids Himangshu from marrying a non-Hindu, and the second requires a legitimate heir within three years of marriage. Bound by these rigid terms, Himangshu marries Alaka, an aspiring actress, setting the stage for a carefully controlled lineage.

A year and a half into this marriage, Harinath, the palace librarian who has grown close to Alaka, vanishes without a trace. The mystery draws in the renowned sleuth Byomkesh Bakshi, along with his author friend, Ajit, who arrive in Balabantpur under the guise of an invitation to a hunting expedition.
