Jennie delivers the valedictorian speech at their Baltimore high school graduation. Daryle accepts a proposal from her high school sweetheart Frankie, signaling shifting plans for the band members.

The band plans to audition for a summer gig in Florida, but Jennie's older brother objects, fearing it will derail college plans. To complicate matters, their keyboardist unexpectedly leaves, and Mooch's van is destroyed by a gang member.

After the van destruction, Jennie borrows a van from a friend but, with guitarist Billie’s help, steals the gang member’s personal van to keep the band on the road. They quickly recruit a male keyboard player, Nicky, to replace the departed member.

The band arrives at the nightclub after hours and fears they might miss their audition. Unable to wait, they decide to track down Martin Falcon and press their case directly.

They discover Falcon’s beach house and meet Hamlet, Falcon’s Doberman, who bonds with them after Billy sings to him. When Falcon returns drunk, he mistakes them for thieves and confronts them.

Falcon offers them the room the winners were meant to use for the summer, but the space is a cramped tool shed with five beds. The band accepts, beginning their makeshift summer stay.

On the next night the band performs, the audience erupts in applause, convincing Falcon to hire them for the summer. This marks their break into a professional gig, despite being outsiders in the beachside scene.

The preppy beach town makes the band stand out, especially Mooch who refuses to remove her black leather jacket. Daryle starts dating a local rich boy and the band is invited to his parties.

Billy’s depression deepens as she takes more pills to cope. Jennie urges Mooch to spend time with Nicky, who has a crush on her, and Jennie herself begins a relationship with Falcon.

Falcon tells Jennie that a music agent friend will come to watch them perform. He hints at a potential European gig, raising expectations for the band.

When Jennie contemplates moving in with Falcon, he ends the relationship to avoid compromising her opportunities. The move underscores the career-vs-personal-life tension.

Billy nearly overdoses, signaling mounting pressure within the band. Frankie arrives at the club and triggers a small riot when he sees Daryle on stage being ogled by the locals.

The agent attends and Jennie runs out after performing a song Falcon wrote for the band. A street gang confronts Mooch over taking their van, but the band fights them off and Hamlet chases them from the club, leading to their arrest.

Jennie implies the agent loved the music, but she turns down the European offer. The group learns the proposed deal would rely on studio musicians rather than the full band.

Nicky explains that the agent didn’t want the full band, only Jennie with studio musicians. Jennie decides the band is more fun and authentic together, says goodbye to Falcon, and heads home with Hamlet now joining The Mystery.
