Satan’s Children (1975) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Satan’s Children (1975), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Bobby, Stephen White, is a teenager who endures relentless bullying and abuse at home. His older stepsister Janice Joyce Molloy torments him, and his cruel stepfather—the Old Man Harry Williams—adds a daily threat to his life. When Janice attempts to expose Bobby for the marijuana he has hidden in his room, he runs away and ends up at a local bar, hoping to escape the danger at home.

There, he meets Jake Bob Barbour, a man who appears friendly but quickly reveals a darker streak. Jake ties Bobby up at knifepoint and calls in three other men, and the group drives through the countryside, repeatedly raping him in the car before leaving him on the side of a country road. The violence is brutal and dehumanizing, setting a grim tone for what follows.

A cult of hippie Satanists discovers Bobby unconscious on the road, and the dynamics inside the group become central to the story. Joshua John Edwards objects to letting Bobby stay, labeling him a queer, while Sherry Kathleen Marie Archer empathizes with him—she herself harbors same-sex desires and forms a fragile bond with Bobby. In the absence of their leader, Simon Robert C. Ray II returns to find the cult already fractured by fear, executions, and simmering jealousy, and he is displeased by Sherry’s conduct as the group tightens its rules.

Sherry endures a series of cruel punishments as the internal tensions within the cult rise. Meanwhile, Simon refuses to accept Bobby, insisting on controlling the boy’s place within the group and casting doubt on his sexuality. Amid this turmoil, Bobby manages to break free from the cult, though the escape is hard-won and leaves him battered both physically and emotionally. He trudges into the woods, narrowly evading pursuers and taking a life or two in the process, a brutal turn that foreshadows the vengeance to come.

Bobby returns home, muddy and changed, and in a furious moment he kills his stepfather. He then abducts Janice and speeds toward Jake’s home, where he systematically shoots Jake and the other men who harmed him, ending their threat in a cold, calculated display. He carries a bag with the severed heads back to the cult compound and shows Simon as a stark proof of his commitment. Reunited with Sherry, Bobby and she share a raw, tense moment of intimacy, even as the remaining cult members enforce their own brutal ritual. Janice is crucified, a bloody, haunting image that marks the final cruelty of the group.

The film unfolds with an unflinching examination of trauma, revenge, and the corrosive effects of abuse across different spaces—home, the bar, and the cult compound. It lingers on Bobby’s transformation from a frightened boy into someone who enacts a terrifying form of justice, prompting difficult questions about culpability, power, and the cost of vengeance. Throughout, the narrative maintains a stark, relentless tone, never shying away from the darkest aspects of its characters’ choices.
