Kuttan Thampuran is the son of Subhadra Thampuratti and Kochanyian Thampuran. He endures epileptic seizures from childhood, making him rough, feared, and a constant source of trouble for the family and village. His deep bond with Haridas reveals tenderness, but his volatile episodes and social burdens push the family toward an arranged marriage with Thankamani; his despair after learning of the affair leads to suicide.

Haridas is Kuttan’s loyal classmate who grows into Hari, a steadfast friend and hidden musical talent. He accompanies Kuttan and carries iron keys to help during seizures, symbolizing protection and devotion. He falls in love with Thankamani, a romance that intensifies the consequences of the arranged marriage.

Thankamani is a student of Bhagavathar and dependent on Illam, who hears Hari’s singing and develops feelings for him. Her romance with Hari complicates the social plan, and she is ultimately married to Kuttan by the elders. The forced union and its aftermath leave her paralyzed and scarred by tragedy.

Subhadra Thampurati is Kuttan’s mother, the matriarch who drives the plan to marry Thankamani to Kuttan and exerts influence to align the family with tradition. She pressures Hari to give up Thankamani for Kuttan’s sake and embodies the older generation’s control over marriage and reputation.

Kochanyian Thampuran is Kuttan’s father, a senior figure who advocates preserving lineage through arranged marriages. He collaborates with Subhadra Thampurati to ensure Thankamani becomes Kuttan’s wife, representing the entrenched social order.

Valiya Thampuran is the elder male in the family, backing the marriage plan and upholding hierarchy within the maangaattu family. His stance reinforces the tradition-driven decisions that propel the plot.

Thekkemadom Nampoothiri advises that the only cure for Kuttan lies in marriage, offering a conventional solution rooted in social norms. He acts as the moral and religious voice guiding the family’s choices.

Bhagavathar is Hari’s father, a renowned classical singer who has not achieved financial success. He discourages Hari from pursuing music and pushes him toward a conventional degree, highlighting the clash between artistic calling and societal expectations.
