A young man, Sanshiro Sugata, troubled by personal problems, takes up judo under master Shogoro Yano. Their school meets hostility from local jujitsu practitioners who see judo as a rival. Sanshiro gains skill and respect, but Shogoro stresses its spiritual side. In a decisive fight against father of his beloved, he learns judo’s true meaning.
