Kansuke Yamamoto, a samurai who dreams of a united, peaceful nation, enters the service of Takeda, lord of Kai. He convinces Takeda to kill the neighboring Suwa lord, take the widow Princess Yu as a concubine, and have her bear Takeda a son. Over years Kansuke uses treachery, poetic insight, and military‑political strategy to expand Takeda’s realm, promote Yu’s son as heir, and ready a final clash with the forces of Echigo, while questioning whether his lofty ambitions have overreached.
