Leif Rucker has spent three decades dragging a truck across the country while methodically “painting” a portrait of his estranged wife, Darlene. Each brush‑stroke is a woman he murders—chosen because she mirrors a trait Darlene possessed. The killings, recorded by a documentary crew, are meant to complete the macabre artwork that he will finally hand to her as proof that he no longer needs her.

The true twist arrives when the filmmaker, Maggie, is revealed to be Rucker’s own daughter. Throughout the film she coaxed him into sharing memories of Darlene, not just out of curiosity but because she was searching for the father who abandoned her. In a harrowing confession she admits that the “person she killed” was none other than Darlene herself—a mercy killing driven by years of abuse and hatred. There is no remorse in her voice; Darlene is portrayed as a villain as cruel as the husband she escaped.

Learning that his wife is already dead shatters Rucker’s twisted ritual. The portrait he has been assembling can never be presented to its subject, and the rage that once fueled his road‑side murders boils over into self‑destruction. In the final moments he turns the gun on himself, ending the cycle of violence that had defined his life.

The completed collage of women’s bodies—the grotesque tribute to Darlene—remains in Maggie’s hands. She now faces a choice: preserve the grisly testament as a relic of her father’s obsession, or discard it as a reminder of the hatred that destroyed both parents. Either way, the film closes on the uneasy silence left after the last stroke has been painted and the last breath has been taken.
