The Met’s staging, crafted by Otto Schenck—who also created the celebrated set for the house’s previous Ring cycle—is exceptionally beautiful. Kurt Moll delivers a wonderful Gurnemanz, though his voice lacks some of the velvety richness heard in his Karajan studio recording a decade earlier. As Parsifal, Thomas Jerusalem shows a hint of wear on his 1992 Met vocal, compared with his prime at Bayreuth in 1981, yet his performance remains impressive; at that time only Plácido Domingo could rival him in the role.
