Michael Williams, a drifter with a troubled past and a recent discharge from the Marine Corps, finds himself living in his car after a job opportunity in a Wyoming oilfield goes awry. His refusal to hide his war injury leads him to the small town of Red Rock, where he seeks employment. However, fate takes a strange turn when he is mistakenly identified by the local bar owner, Wayne, as a hitman dubbed “Lyle from Dallas.” Believing he has found a golden opportunity, Wayne offers Michael a tempting sum of money—“half now, half later”—and in a moment of desperation, he decides to go along with the charade.

Instead of carrying out the hit on Wayne’s wife, Suzanne, Michael visits her to convey her imminent danger. Surprisingly, she offers him even more cash to dispose of Wayne. As he plans to leave town with the stolen money, Michael encounters an injured man on the roadside, prompting him to make a compassionate detour to the hospital. Unfortunately, this good deed leads to dire consequences, as the local sheriff turns out to be none other than Wayne. Just as Michael manages to slip away, he encounters the actual hitman, Lyle, who is hot on his trail.

The following morning, chaos erupts when Lyle arrives at Wayne’s bar demanding money. He kidnaps both Suzanne and Michael during a convoluted attempt to access a safe in Wayne’s office. A deeper conspiracy unravels, revealing that Wayne and Suzanne are on the run for embezzlement. As Wayne is apprehended by his own deputies, Lyle returns with their hostages to force Wayne into recovering buried cash from a graveyard. An intense conflict ensues, resulting in Lyle’s demise and Wayne sustaining critical injuries, while Michael is also caught in the crossfire.

In a desperate bid for freedom, Michael and Suzanne hop onto a train. However, as Suzanne betrays him, Michael takes a drastic decision: he throws the cash out of the moving train and pushes her off, ensuring she is captured by the police. With a slight smirk, he bids farewell by stating, > “Adios, Red Rock.” Ultimately, as the train speeds away, Michael keeps a small packet of bills that has miraculously remained intact, leaving him to ponder his uncertain future.
