Set in 1914 in Breisford, Wisconsin, young Sterling finds a raccoon cub whose mother was killed by a hunter and names him Rascal. The boy and the cub become inseparable, but Rascal’s mischief in neighbors’ gardens shows how hard keeping a wild animal is. Their final year together brings adventures, the loss of Sterling’s mother, and his father's ruin.
