Rainy Dog

Yuji is fired from his yakuza syndicate and soon becomes a pay-per-hit assassin for another boss, targeting members of rival factions. His life grows more complicated when an ex-girlfriend drops off his mute son, Ah-Chen, who immediately starts to shadow him. The boy witnesses a brutal moment: his father shoots a man dining with his wife and infant son. Afterwards, the boy trails him to a whorehouse where he waits outside, while he scavenges food from the garbage and befriends a chained puppy in the alley.

Lili, a prostitute, enters Yuji’s world and the two form a live-in arrangement that feels practical, possibly by contract with her procurer. The peace is short-lived when the brother of Yuji’s recent victim, a lawyer, approaches the syndicate to request a revenge attack on Yuji. The circumstances surrounding one of his contract killings force the trio to flee, taking temporary refuge on a quiet beach. There, Lili teaches the mute boy to read and to spell his name, “Chen,” giving him a sense of identity.

The lawyer discovers the relationship and expands his website to offer a reward for information about her. As they prepare to leave town, Yuji calls his new boss to secure a passport, only to discover that the boss knows about the reward and has alerted the lawyer. Betrayed, they seek refuge at the apartment of a friend of Lili, a trans woman named Sandy. While there, Lili learns of the reward and realizes Sandy has turned them in to collect.

Yuji sends Lili and Ah-Chen to a train station and confronts his boss in order to end things on his own terms, but they are captured by the lawyer and Lili is killed. Yuji faces off with the lawyer, yet Chen’s distraction allows a killer to strike, knocking Yuji out. When the dust settles, an old, inept hitman appears and kills Yuji. The lawyer reawakens and delivers one final message to Chen: if he ever seeks revenge in the future, someone will be waiting.
