As a child, Ned accidentally revives his mother after she dies of an aneurysm, which initiates his ability to reanimate the dead. Ned's mother dies permanently after kissing him goodnight, leading to the family's upheaval. His father sends Ned to boarding school, and Chuck's family, including her agoraphobic aunts Vivian and Lily, move in to care for her. These events create emotional distances between Ned and Chuck.
