On a remote Turkish–Armenian border, a long-dormant volcano roars back to life, unearthing a nest of mysterious eggs that hatch into prehistoric pterodactyls. Prof. Michael Lovecraft [Cameron Daddo] and his partner, Kate Heinlein [Amy Sloan], lead a small field excursion with a tight-knit group of teenagers—Gwen Zelazny [Danna Lee], Jason Donaldson [Howie Lotker], Willis Bradbury [Steve Braun], and Angie Lem [Mircea Monroe]—as they hope to uncover ancient fossils for Michael’s research. The day begins in a Turkish forest with cautious optimism, but the mood shifts quickly as they navigate a muggy heat and a strange, bird-like urine smell that Willis glimpses near a mound before they press on toward a campsite by a lake.

In the water, Angie wanders off for a swim, only to come face-to-face with a prowling predator. A terrified chase erupts, and the lurking pterodactyl drags her back toward the trees. Jason, drawn toward the noise, is pulled into the ominous water, and his fate is sealed before Michael and Willis can mount a rescue. The tragedy drives home the startling realization that something ancient and deadly stalks the area, something far beyond their field-guide expectations.

Meanwhile, Captain Bergen [Coolio] and his squad move through the same dense forest, methodically hunting Armenian terrorist Yolen, a man connected to Bergen’s own painful past and whose capture has become the mission du jour. As Bergen’s team closes in on Yolen, the landscape suddenly erupts in chaos when the same winged hunters descend upon the group of students and their guides. A brutal, coordinated attack leaves Gwen dead, and the survivors are forced to flee through the trees with Bergen’s squad providing covering fire.

Although initial distrust lingers, Bergen acknowledges a personal stake in the mission after learning that he once served with Kate’s father, which nudges him toward offering protection to the civilians. The convoy-style escape evolves into a trek on foot as the group seeks shelter, while Angie’s loss hangs heavy and Willis struggles to stay upright after the brutal ambush. The pterodactyls press the group relentlessly, and another brutal strike leaves Zelazny gravely wounded and Willis unable to walk. In the wake of the assault, Kate is captured and carried away to a distant nest, her radio a bleak lifeline to the outside world.

The survivors push forward, seeking a safe refuge, only to be corralled by the relentless flock once more. A hunting cabin becomes a fragile holdout, where Kate is heard by Bergen via the captured radio and a rescue line is prepared to bridge a chasm that separates them. Serling [George Calil], a soldier with Bergen, undertakes the dangerous crossing to bring Kate to safety, while Yolen makes another bid for power, gripping a pistol and trying to turn the tide in his favor. In the ensuing chaos, Yolen is grabbed by a pterodactyl and dragged into the nest, where he meets a grim end at the jaws of the chicks.

The rescue attempt reaches a fever pitch as the line is hammered by winged attackers, and Serling’s courage is tested to its limit. A desperate grapple follows: Bergen fights to hold the line, while Michael persuades Yolen to relinquish a weapon—an act that backfires as Yolen tries to betray them at the last moment and is devoured by the hungry young. The line is severed, dropping Serling into a deadly chasm as Kate clings to safety. With Serling mortally wounded, he detonates a final explosive in the nest, destroying a substantial portion of the flock and earning a grim salute from Bergen as he succumbs to his injuries.

Ascending from the treeline, the survivors face one last, brutal challenge: the Alpha Pterodactyl. Bergen fires a rocket in a dramatic bid to end the threat, delivering a boastful line—> the music’s coming down and guess what I’m your DJ—but the Alpha proves elusive once more. Michael keeps the missile focused, and at last, the beast is brought down in a decisive strike. In the aftermath, Kate and Michael share a quiet, relieved kiss, and peace seems to be within reach—until the volcano craters beneath the final curtain, and a long-shadowed Allosaurus emerges, reminding them that danger may still loom from beneath the earth.
