Vaudeville-era magician Presto Doug Sweetland is famous for a hat trick that fans remember: he pulls his rabbit Alec Azam out of his top hat. The act hinges on a mysterious, almost comic connection between two hats—one on stage and a wizard’s hat kept backstage—with Alec imprisoned in a small cage, hungry and irritable, unable to reach his carrot. After Presto returns from a meal, he tries to rehearse the routine with Alec, revealing the twist: anything that passes into either hat will reappear from the other. The setup promises a seamless, show-stopping moment, but the rabbit’s impatience quickly becomes the show’s engine of mischief.

As the performance begins, Alec refuses to cooperate until his carrot is provided, and the prankster magic turns wryly against Presto. Alec deftly uses the magical linkage to transform the hat-trick routine into a series of escalating gags that the audience joyfully perceives as part of the act. From a misfired flourish to a cascade of harmless disasters, the hat-and-rabbit dynamic sabotages Presto’s confidence in a string of slapstick mishaps: Presto’s finger gets caught in a mousetrap, a pie-like egg smacks him in the eye, a drawer seals his hand, another poke lands a fresh jab to the face, and an ill-fated venture into an air vent leads to a momentary loss of balance. A ladder, a sequence of pranks, and a passing joke about the carrot all feed the onlookers’ cheer, while Alec’s antics underscore that the trick is less about control and more about timing and misdirection.

Presto’s frustration grows as Alec doubles down, and the rabbit’s retaliation leverages the hats’ magical link to turn the carrot into a flower—and later, into nothing at all—before finally smashing it. Alec even pushes the tool of illusion to an electrical miscue: using the hats to send Presto’s finger into an exposed socket. The backstage atmosphere tightens into a frantic chase as Presto pursues Alec through the wings, the tension rising as the curtain is drawn.

In a tense turn, Presto trips on a rope and is hoisted up into the fly space above the stage. The curtain swells as the stage lights blaze, and when Presto’s foot comes loose, he plummets toward the stage below. A cascade of props tumbles, and a hanging piano seems poised to crush him, but Alec makes a dramatic, last-minute use of the hats’ magic to save his captor. The rescue is met with wild audience approval, the carrot is restored, and a sense of gratitude settles between the unlikely duo. In a final gesture of recognition, Presto gives Alec back the carrot and grants the rabbit second billing on the posters advertising the act, acknowledging that the true star of the show is the partnership that turned mischief into spectacle.
