Please Stand By…

Wendy, an autistic young woman, lives in a San Francisco group home under the watch of Scottie. She spends her days writing a 427-page Star Trek script in hopes of winning Paramount Pictures' screenwriting contest. Her fixation on Star Trek shapes her every routine and goal.

Audrey visits Wendy and shares pictures of her infant daughter Ruby, revealing she plans to sell their childhood home. Wendy asks to be taken home so she can care for Ruby if she wins the contest, but Audrey says she is not capable of caring for a baby. Wendy has a meltdown, and Audrey leaves the group home in tears.

After missing the mail-in deadline, Wendy decides to deliver her script personally. She leaves the group home early in the morning, followed by the group home's small dog, Pete. They board a bus toward Los Angeles, and are left behind by the roadside when Pete wanders away.

Wendy finds herself in a shanty town where she is robbed of most of her money. In a nearby shop, she narrowly escapes being swindled again, thanks to the intervention of Rose, an elderly woman who sympathizes with her autistic condition. Rose lets Wendy ride a senior citizens' bus with her.

While on the senior citizens' bus with Rose, the driver falls asleep, and the bus crashes. Wendy wakes up in a hospital in Bakersfield with her goal still intact: to deliver the script. She escapes the hospital, leaving the injured bus behind, and begins to rewrite her lost pages.

From the Bakersfield hospital, Wendy begins rewriting on scrap paper after losing part of her script. She pieces together new pages while avoiding being found, determined to continue her mission. Her journey toward LA continues despite the chaos around her.

Audrey and Scottie grow concerned when Wendy is discovered missing and file a missing-person report. They deduce that she likely headed to Los Angeles to deliver the script personally. Police involvement and the hospital's alerts escalate the search.

Scottie and her son Sam drive toward Los Angeles to track Wendy. At Bakersfield, the hospital notifies them of her location, and they discover two missing pages of the script on the hospital premises.

Unable to buy a bus ticket, Wendy hides in the baggage compartment of the next bus bound for Los Angeles. She endures a cramped, claustrophobic ride and finally reaches LA, where she begins wandering the city again.

Two police officers recognize Wendy from the missing-person report. Officer Frank earns her trust by speaking to her in Klingon, and they bring her to the police station for safety and to reunite her with her family.

Audrey, Scottie, and Wendy are driven to Paramount Pictures so she can submit her script in person. Inside, she cunningly slips past a rude mailroom worker and places the script into the turn-in box.

Paramount informs Wendy that her script was not chosen, but encourages her to continue writing. She feels a sense of accomplishment, having completed the mission and proving herself capable beyond others' expectations.

Wendy returns to the group home and later visits their childhood home, where she holds her infant niece Ruby for the first time. Audrey embraces her, signaling a quiet acceptance and renewed connection between sisters.
