Piku Banerjee, portrayed by Deepika Padukone, is a talented Bengali architect living in Delhi with her elderly father, Bhashkor, played by Amitabh Bachchan. Bhashkor is a man plagued by chronic constipation, and he humorously attributes every problem to his bowel issues. His quirky habits often lead to friction with their staff, like Budhan, who is portrayed by Balendra Singh, and annoyances with frequent visitor Chhobi Mashi, played by Moushumi Chatterjee.
While Piku deeply cares for her father, the loss of her mother has placed the responsibility of his well-being squarely on her shoulders, which sometimes leads to her frustration with his eccentricities. Despite undergoing various medical evaluations that yield normal results, Bhashkor remains discontented and hyper-focused on his health.
The situation escalates when Bhashkor unjustly fires yet another housemaid, further complicating their daily lives. Piku’s partner at work, Syed Afroz, played by Jisshu Sengupta, is supportive, though she frequently utilizes Rana Chaudhary’s taxi service, played by Irrfan Khan. Piku’s high-maintenance nature makes her a challenging passenger, often causing commotion and accidents due to her critical and backseat-driving tendencies.
As they navigate their lives, Bhashkor expresses his disdain for marriage, claiming it to be a misguided choice. He wishes for Piku to solely care for him, lamenting her mother’s lost independence. Bhashkor even criticizes Chhobi Mashi for her multiple marriages, suggesting she neglected her own daughter, Eisha, represented by Rupsa Banerjee.
Piku’s dating life also becomes problematic; a romantic evening with Aniket, played by Akshay Oberoi, is disrupted by Bhashkor’s incessant interruptions regarding his health. With no other drivers willing to take on Piku’s difficult requests, Rana reluctantly steps in, but not without some initial resistance.
Despite the challenges, familial affection shines through. After an incident involving too much drinking at Chhobi Mashi’s party that leads to a health scare for Bhashkor, Piku worries deeply for her father. When Bhashkor’s cousin Nabendu arrives with plans to sell their ancestral home, Piku is torn between honoring her father’s wishes and her own feelings about the past.
When they decide to embark on a road trip to Kolkata to discuss the property, numerous humorous and heartfelt moments emerge. Rana is taken aback when he discovers the extent of the preparations for the journey, which includes a lavatory chair and a deluge of luggage. The travel is peppered with Bhashkor’s demanding nature and peculiar requests that test Rana’s patience.
During their travel, Rana divulges his background as an engineer and his frustrating experiences in Saudi Arabia, which leads to a deeper connection with Piku. They spend the night in Varanasi, leading to a rather awkward sleeping arrangement where Rana shares a room with Piku and Bhashkor due to fully booked accommodations.
Upon reaching Kolkata, old family dynamics resurface as Bhashkor invites Rana to linger longer, while subtle exchanges between Piku and Rana hint at unresolved feelings. As Bhashkor’s health becomes more precarious, he begins to embrace a more active lifestyle, reflective of Rana’s encouragement to be less picky about food.
Ultimately, tragedy strikes when Bhashkor passes away peacefully in his sleep, fulfilling his wish for a serene end. Piku returns to Delhi to arrange a dignified farewell for her father, where she discovers more about him, including his knowledge of Syed’s own health issues. In the days following, Piku chooses to honor her father’s memory by renaming their home “Bhashkor Villa” and welcoming back the maid who had previously left due to the tension in the household.
