Suku and his friend Paachan were staying at a lodge in Coimbatore when a thief attempted to steal Suku's motorcycle. During the pursuit, Suku inadvertently killed the thief. It was not premeditated, he panicked and fought back in the chaos, resulting in the accidental death.

After the incident, Suku fled back to his village in fear. His friend Paachan introduced him to Thanku, a small-time criminal knowledgeable about law. Thanku advised Suku to feign insanity and obtain a mental health certificate to use as a defense in court. Suku was admitted to a mental health facility for ten days, and the police eventually closed the case, mistaking the incident as a hit-and-run.

Suku was terrified of going to prison for killing the thief. Thanku, who understood police procedures, suggested that feigning mental illness could serve as a legal defense. By obtaining a certificate from a mental health institution, Suku hoped to avoid criminal charges and imprisonment.

While Suku was admitted to the mental health facility, his mother and her friends saw him there. They did not know it was part of a scheme and assumed he had genuinely lost his mind. This sparked village gossip, and when Suku returned, his family and neighbors treated him as mentally ill, despite his protests.

Sheeba originally tried to elope with Kunjaayi during her pre-wedding celebrations, convincing Suku to come along. When the plan went wrong, Suku took her to his house to protect her from her furious parents, not realizing she had orchestrated her own escape. She then claimed to be his girlfriend to gain acceptance from his family.

Sheeba is an orphan raised by step-parents who wanted to force her into an arranged marriage. Their real motive was to seize her inheritance by marrying her off against her wishes. Sheeba resisted because she wanted to complete her education and live independently.

Although Suku helped her escape her oppressive family and supported her dream of education, Sheeba did not reciprocate his romantic feelings. She was grateful for his help but saw him primarily as a supportive friend rather than a love interest. Her priority was achieving independence and completing her education.

Throughout the story, Suma, Suku's neighbor and a nurse, secretly harbored feelings for him, but Suku dismissed her as like a sister. After Sheeba rejected his confession, Suku finally recognized Suma's love for him. He proposed to her on the return journey, and she happily accepted, marking a new beginning for both.

After violently confronting Sheeba's father and his goons who came to take her away, Suku decided to support Sheeba legally. He enrolled her in a women's hostel so she could pursue her education and live independently, away from her oppressive family. This was his way of helping her achieve the freedom she desperately wanted.

Thanku was Paachan's uncle, a small-time criminal with knowledge of law and police procedures. He guided Suku through the cover-up by advising him to fake insanity and helped him navigate the moral dilemmas that followed. Thanku played a key role in helping Suku avoid arrest and eventually find a path toward redemption.

Sheeba initially tried to escape with Peter, a local goon, hoping he would help her oppose her parents. When that failed, she convinced Kunjaayi to visit her during her pre-wedding celebrations and used the opportunity to actually elope. Kunjaayi was unaware of her true intentions and was merely a means to an end for her escape.
