Out of Sight

Foley is incarcerated at Lompoc Penitentiary where he befriends Buddy and meets Glenn and the white-collar thief Ripley. He saves Ripley from extortion by rival Miller, earning Ripley's promise of a job and the hint that diamonds are hidden at his home. The fragile criminal network begins to form inside prison and foreshadows the outside thefts to come.

After his release, Foley confronts Ripley in his office and is offered only a menial security guard job. He then spots a bank across the street, attempts to rob it but fails, and is subsequently sent to Glades Correctional Institution in Florida. The encounter sets up the cross-country crime arc that follows.

At Glades, Foley suspects Chino is orchestrating a breakout and calls Adele to warn Buddy and Glenn. U.S. Marshal Karen Sisco arrives during the breakout, Foley exits the tunnel in a guard's uniform, overpowers her, and the fugitives steal her car. Foley forces Sisco to hide in the trunk as Buddy drives, and they head toward Miami.

Inside the trunk, Foley and Sisco begin talking; Sisco recognizes Foley from a prior transport job and convinces Glenn to drive off with her to avoid arrest. The escape edges toward the outside world as they trade glances and tension builds along the road to Miami. The uneasy dynamic foreshadows their conflicted loyalties.

Sisco has a dream in which she tracks Foley, but rather than arrest him, they have sex. Waking from the dream, she resolves to join the task force pursuing Foley and to close the case on him.

Separately, Sisco questions Adele and ends up arresting Chino at Adele's apartment when Chino arrives seeking revenge on Foley.

Foley and Buddy spot Sisco in an elevator en route to the basement garage and let them go, avoiding a direct confrontation with the pursuing agents. The moment cements a fragile peace even as the chase continues.

The crew heads to Detroit to break into Ripley's mansion and steal the hidden diamonds. Miller has begun assembling his own burglary team, including his brother-in-law and White Boy Bob, and ultimately agrees to team up with Foley and Buddy.

Foley surprises Sisco at her hotel's bar; they share a drink and spend a romantic night together. Their growing attraction complicates their professional boundaries as the plan moves toward execution.

Glenn gets cold feet and runs into Sisco, who lets him escape while she continues to tail Foley. The moment heightens tension as the crew presses toward the Detroit heist.

The thieves break into Ripley's mansion, threaten the housekeeper, and struggle to force open the safe upstairs. Foley discovers the diamonds are hidden in Ripley’s tropical fish tank, while Ripley reveals his love for Midge and Miller closes in.

Foley returns to protect Midge, shoots Kenneth, and White Boy Bob accidentally shoots himself. Sisco arrives and shoots Miller in self-defense; the criminals' plan collapses in the mansion.

In the police van outside, Foley confronts Sisco with an empty gun and begs her to kill him. She shoots him in the leg and arrests him, ending the pursuit for now.

Inside the van, Foley meets Hejira Henry, a detainee who claims to have escaped nine times. Henry hints at the plan surrounding their return to Glades, and Foley realizes Sisco arranged the ride to Florida.
