What Happens in Oriana: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Oriana (1985) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Maria, a Venezuelan woman Daniela Silverio returns to Venezuela from France when she learns that her aunt Oriana Doris Wells has died and willed her a crumbling and remote Venezuelan hacienda where Maria spent a short time as a girl just entering puberty. She travels to the hacienda, a grand yet decaying old house set in a lush tropical jungle at the edge of the sea, to prepare the place for sale; while visiting, Maria wanders through the halls and rooms and begins to remember her visit years before. As she combs through Oriana’s papers, she uncovers clues about her aunt’s behavior that hint at hidden histories and secrets long buried.

Maria is haunted by flashbacks to her childhood, when she spent several months at the hacienda in the company of only the beautiful and mysterious Oriana and Fidelia [Mirtha Borges], a quarrelsome old retainer who constantly hints at terrible events that are best forgotten. In these memories, the film reveals the quiet but strange atmosphere that surrounds the place, and Maria grapples with questions about why Oriana never leaves the hacienda and what secrets may lie in Oriana’s past. The young Maria imagines Oriana’s youth, a cruel father Asdrúbal Meléndez, and first love, weaving together memory and imagination as the line between them blurs.

After these reveries within reveries, Maria, now a grown woman, makes a pivotal discovery by connecting strands of the past with present clues, finding evidence that someone unseen may still be living nearby in the vicinity. This revelation deepens the sense that the hacienda is not merely a place of memories but a presence that persists beneath the surface. With this new understanding, Maria faces a choice shaped by duty, longing, and the echo of the past, ultimately deciding not to sell the house and to preserve its history rather than erase it.

Oriana Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Oriana (1985): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Oriana never leave the hacienda?

Oriana never left the hacienda because the place held crucial memories from her past, including those of a cruel father and a first love. The house became her prison and sanctuary simultaneously - she guarded secrets tied to her past and remained bound to the estate both emotionally and perhaps physically. The hacienda itself seems to function as a character that keeps those connected to it tethered to a single place.

Foreshadowing: Earlier scenes establish the hacienda as a place where memories linger and refuse to release their inhabitants.

Q2

What secrets did Oriana keep?

Oriana kept several secrets tied to her past: the memory of a cruel father who controlled her life and the history of a first love that likely shaped her emotional isolation. Her papers hinted at strange behavior and guarded knowledge from the outside world. The exact nature of what she protected remains mysterious, but the secrets appear connected to forbidden love and family trauma that made her retreat from the world entirely.

Foreshadowing: The flashbacks to Oriana's youth reveal her father's cruelty and hint at a romantic relationship that may have been forbidden.

Q3

Why did Maria decide not to sell the hacienda?

Maria decided not to sell the hacienda because she became invested in uncovering the truth behind its mysteries and preserving its history. After discovering evidence of a hidden presence and learning about Oriana's past, she felt a sense of duty to guard the secrets rather than erase them. The house represented a connection to her own childhood and family history that she could not simply discard for profit.

Foreshadowing: Maria's growing investigation throughout the film creates emotional attachment to the place and its unresolved stories.

Q4

Who was the hidden person living near the hacienda?

The summary suggests Maria found evidence that someone unseen may still be living nearby in the vicinity of the hacienda, but the exact identity remains ambiguous. The hints of a hidden resident become more tangible as Maria continues to explore and listen for unspoken signs. This presence adds to the atmosphere of mystery, suggesting the hacienda's influence extends beyond the immediate family history.

Foreshadowing: Earlier scenes mention strange sounds and disturbed objects that hint at someone else being present.

Q5

What happened to Oriana's father?

Oriana's father was described as cruel, using flashbacks and imagined memories to reveal his controlling nature. This cruelty in Oriana's youth helps explain why she became reclusive and never left the hacienda. The harsh treatment from her father appears to be a defining trauma that shaped her entire adult life and her relationship with the family estate.

Foreshadowing: The young Maria's visions of Oriana's past directly depict the father's harsh treatment.

Q6

Who was Oriana's first love?

The film reveals that Oriana had a first love during her youth at the hacienda, though the specific identity is not detailed in the summary. This romantic relationship appears to have been significant and likely contributed to why she remained tethered to the estate. The memory of this first love seems to be one of the secrets Oriana guarded and likely forms part of why she never left.

Why was Maria haunted by childhood memories at the hacienda?

Maria was haunted by childhood memories because she spent several months at the hacienda as a girl just entering puberty, a formative period in her life. The memories merged her present investigation with past experiences, blending reality and imagination as she tried to understand Oriana's strange behavior. The house itself seemed to remember her as much as she remembered it, creating an emotional pull that blurred the line between memory and reality.

She represented the living memory of the house's dark history and served as a link between Maria's childhood visit and the mysteries of Oriana's past. Her hints about dark events contributed to the uneasy atmosphere that surrounded the estate.

Q9

What did Maria discover in Oriana's papers?

Maria discovered notes that hinted at Oriana's strange behavior and the secrets she kept hidden from the outside world. The documents suggested Oriana rarely left the hacienda and guarded something significant. These discoveries blurred the line between memory and rumor, drawing Maria deeper into the mystery of her aunt's life and the reasons behind her reclusive existence.

Q10

Why did Oriana leave the hacienda to Maria?

Oriana chose to leave the hacienda to Maria, her niece who had visited as a child, likely because she saw Maria as someone who could understand and preserve its history. Given Maria's childhood memories of the place and her emotional connection to Oriana, the aunt may have believed Maria would be the one to guard the secrets rather than sell the property to strangers who would erase its past.

Foreshadowing: The opening news of inheritance establishes that Oriana specifically chose Maria as her heir.
