In 1860, the overthrow of King Francesco of the Two Sicilies drives him and his wife, Queen Maria Sofia, into a modest exile in Rome. This seriocomic drama follows their adjustment: the resigned king spends his days lobbying the Vatican to canonise his beloved mother, while his queen, disguised in men’s clothing, travels Italy stirring rebellion and frantic‑ly seeking an heir.
