Sixteen‑year‑old Terezka leaves school in Slovakia with a note for her mother and embarks on a surreal quest to find her. Along the way she drifts between reality and fantasy, encountering a man hired to burn garments, a woman buried in the earth, a teenage bride married to an older widower, her brother in a special school, a decadent TV comedian and his wife, a powerful mobster in a restaurant kitchen, a former lover of her mother, and finally her promiscuous mother, who urges her to travel the world.
