Rufus Billings, a hypochondriac born premature, learns his late father left him $750,000 payable in three years. Convinced he won’t survive that time, he asks his doctor for a $100,000 loan to hire a live‑in nurse, signing over his inheritance to the greedy trio Clinch, McIntosh and Peck, who, with the doctor, bet he’ll outlive the debt.
