Guido, who runs a marble quarry, falls in love with Luisa, the modest daughter of one of his workers, and they welcome a baby boy. Guido’s mother disapproves; she first sends her son abroad and then arranges the child's abduction, leading Luisa to believe the infant perished in a fire.
