Alma, a young trapeze artist, performs with a rundown traveling circus. In desperation she engages in incest with her father, a sickly clown haunted by the woman who left them. Seeking a child, she abandons the troupe and joins Refugio’s band of preachers, a woman who stages biblical puppet shows in impoverished neighborhoods.
