Nick Tellis, portrayed by Jason Patric, is an undercover police officer haunted by the memories of his last assignment, which culminated in a tense foot chase after a ruthless drug dealer named Dowd. In a frantic attempt to catch the dealer, Tellis witnesses Dowd threatening to inject a little girl with a lethal drug. Although Tellis successfully shoots the dealer, his bullet ricochets and accidentally strikes a pregnant woman, leaving her seriously injured. As children scream in horror, Tellis desperately calls for help.

Fast forward eight months, and Nick is now suspended and facing a police committee regarding the fallout from that incident. The committee questions him about the woman’s injuries and the tragic loss of her baby. Despite knowing the details have been reviewed, Tellis’s agitation grows when a committee member, Liz Detmer, played by Karen Robinson, asks if he has reached out to Jeanine Mueller, the woman affected by his actions. He admits to having spoken with her but remains tight-lipped about the details, asserting that it’s personal. The committee continues to push, with Liz suggesting that maybe a less aggressive approach could have saved the infant’s life, prompting Tellis to snap back with conviction, stating:

“My duty assignment was solely undercover narcotic work. Do you have any idea what that entails?”

Liz insists she has a grasp of the situation, but Tellis firmly counters, “Well then, generally speaking, you don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.” Tensions escalate, and ultimately, Tellis slams down his demands for respect, hinting that if this inquiry turns into an ambush, he will walk away.

When the committee brings up the unsolved Michael Calvess case, they express concern that, due to Tellis’ abrupt departure from the force, his connections within the drug scene could prove beneficial in solving the murder. They propose reinstating him as a homicide detective if he agrees to assist. Tellis unequivocally declines and storms out, only to be followed by Captain Cheevers, played by Chi McBride, who expresses regret over the committee’s handling of things and advises Tellis to peruse some files regarding Calvess’s murder.

Back at home, Tellis discusses the committee’s expectations with his wife, Audrey, played by Krista Bridges. As he lounges on the couch, he reflects on their conversation, expressing disdain at their presumption that he should appear contrite and submissive. Audrey is worried about the potential implications of him diving back into work, given their difficult past. She insists that he explore other options for a job, but Tellis feels the financial strain and begins reviewing case files. He searches through the remains of Calvess’s belongings and becomes fixated on the name Henry Oak, portrayed by Ray Liotta, who was too close to Calvess to work on the case. Captain Cheevers warns Tellis that Oak is a loose cannon—an unstable figure whose temperament could endanger the investigation.

In stark contrast, we see Oak’s aggressive demeanor as he physically assaults a suspect in the precinct, increasingly serving as a wild card in an already tumultuous situation. As the investigation unfolds, Tellis and Oak develop a tumultuous partnership, both haunted by past traumas. Oak, who’s wrestling with his own demons, reveals personal stories that shed light on his intense passion for justice, while he and Tellis dig deeper into the case.

As the narrative intensifies, Tellis finds himself torn between pursuing justice for Calvess and the dark realities of his own past. The two men confront their shared traumas as they engage in a series of high-stakes confrontations with suspects while navigating the murky waters of corruption within their ranks. Tellis grapples with his demons, including his wife’s concerns about his dangerous behavior, while uncovering a tangled web connecting Calvess’s murder to the very heart of the department they serve.

Through moments of auditory flashbacks and intense physical confrontations, the case of Michael Calvess erupts into chaos, leading to tragic revelations that shake the very foundation of their moral compasses. Ultimately, Tellis’s relentless search for truth culminates in a devastating confrontation with Oak, leaving him grappling with the harsh realities of a law enforcement life that’s intricately woven with betrayal and loss.
