Joe Doakes complains to his wife about the monotony of his meals, especially missing stewed tomatoes, which he mistakenly thinks are rationed for the war. Though she knows tomatoes aren’t limited, she lets him vow to grow enough for the whole block. As he tends the garden, he receives conflicting advice but feels proud of bringing the fruit to maturity despite a modest yield and any outside meddling.
