Tommasso, a sincere but struggling sculptor, works in an ornamental plaster shop while secretly carving a bust of his famous opera‑singer cousin Caroli. He wants to marry his model Rosa, but her father Pietro pushes her toward the more prosperous greengrocer Lombardi. Tommasso spends his money on opera tickets for Rosa, only to be embarrassed when the cousins meet at a restaurant and fail to recognize each other. To win Rosa back, he must restore his reputation and sell the Caroli bust.
