In early‑20th‑century Paris, theatre owner César Charron stages the play “Murders in the Rue Morgue” with his wife Madeleine, who is tormented by dreadful nightmares. A string of acid murders strikes people connected to César, drawing the attention of Inspector Vidocq. The chief suspect is César’s former partner René Marot, who had killed Madeleine’s mother years earlier and then taken his own life.
