What Happens at the End of Murder in Monaco?

How Murder in Monaco (2025) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

The documentary ends by laying out the stark contrast between the official verdict and the lingering doubts that still surround Edmond Safra’s death. After the fire that ripped through Safra’s heavily guarded Monaco penthouse on 3 December 1999, investigators concluded that Ted Maher, the nurse on duty, had deliberately set the blaze in a desperate attempt to become a hero and later claim a reward. The court accepted that version, finding Maher guilty of murder and sentencing him to prison, even though his own testimony claimed he was coerced by Russian mobsters and that he had been kidnapped the night before.

The film then follows Maher’s life after his release, showing how he vanished from the public eye, adopted the alias Jon Green, and continued a pattern of deceit and violence. Within a few years he married Dr. Kim Lark, only to forge checks in her name, steal her car and rescue dogs, and ultimately solicit a fellow inmate to kill her with fentanyl. That crime secured another conviction—this time for criminal solicitation to commit first‑degree murder—and a nine‑year sentence that keeps him behind bars until 2031.

By juxtaposing the polished, “secure” image of Monaco and Safra’s fortress‑like residence with the shaky, often contradictory evidence presented at trial, the documentary leaves viewers with a sense that the official story may never fully explain what really happened that night. It underscores how the powerful, the wealthy, and the mysterious—especially figures like Lily Safra, whose late husband’s death also attracted suspicion—can shape a narrative that ends with a convicted nurse, yet still feels unfinished. The final moments suggest that while Maher paid a legal price, the true motives behind the fire and the possible involvement of others remain an open, unsettling question.
