Kunjikrishna Menon is introduced as the head of a joint family with strict and domineering traits. His son Kesavankutty loves Kochammini, Menon's sister's daughter, while Balan, Kochammini's brother, is also in love with her. The family dynamics and relationships are established early on.

A conflict over property leads to the splitting of the joint family. Madhavi Amma, along with her son and daughter, is forced to move out of her ancestral home due to this dispute. The division causes tension and upheaval within the family.

Menon, who has been paying for his nephews' education, decides to stop funding, offering to pay only for one of them. Madhavi Amma pleads with him to pay for her son's schooling, but he remains adamant, forcing sacrifices from the family.

Menon arranges the marriage of Bhagi to Aniyan, a responsible young man, intending to link their families. He also plans to marry off Kesavankutty and Kochammini, promising that their marriage will happen after Bhagi and Aniyan's wedding, though he later changes his plans.

Balan persuades Bhagi to marry Aniyan, so her sister Kochammini can marry Kesavankutty. This decision is made to satisfy family plans, even though Bhagi is initially shocked and dismayed by the arrangement.

Despite planning to marry Kesavankutty and Kochammini after Bhagi and Aniyan, Menon changes his mind and arranges Kesavankutty's marriage with a wealthy girl from outside the family, prioritizing social status over previous promises.

Kesavankutty, who failed his exams and has no job, depends on his father for support. He is forced to accept his father's plans for his wedding with the wealthy girl, highlighting his dependency and lack of independence.

Balan arranges for Kochammini to marry Chandran. However, Chandran's father demands a substantial dowry, creating tension and financial strain. Balan seeks help from Aniyan, but he feigns inability to gather the money.

Angered by the dowry situation, Bhagi leaves her house and gives jewelry to Balan to pawn for money, showing her desperation. This act underscores the financial hardships and family tensions surrounding the marriages.

A repentant and sympathetic Aniyan convinces Chandran to marry Kochammini, seeking to resolve the marriage dilemma and prevent further conflict. His change of heart influences subsequent events.

Balan intervenes and persuades Kesavankutty to marry Kochammini, aiming for a harmonious union. Despite the earlier plans, this decision temporarily restores hope for the couple.

Upon reaching Balan’s home for the wedding, Kochammini tragically commits suicide. Her death symbolizes the intensity of family conflicts and emotional distress caused by the arranged marriages and societal pressures.
