Originally, the filmmakers had planned for Imhotep to simply fall into the water and deliver his iconic line, "Death is only the beginning," without much visual fanfare. However, during post-production, it became clear that a quiet exit lacked the necessary impact for a character who had wielded such immense power. To rectify this, the scene was augmented with visual effects that show Imhotep’s body rapidly reverting to its desiccated state as he sinks.
