A disillusioned young girl, eager to forge her own path and live according to her own principles, sets out on a journey alongside a volatile assembly of radical revolutionaries in director Alison Murray’s bold coming-of-age road film. Sherry, portrayed by Ellen Page, embodies a contradiction; yearning for acceptance while fiercely clinging to her individuality.
Upon encountering a group called SPARKS (Street People Armed with Radical Knowledge), Sherry makes the momentous decision to join these intriguing counter-culture activists as they traverse Europe. This youthful and idealistic traveler seems to have finally discovered a new family who embraces her authentic self. However, as the SPARKS group settles into an abandoned vineyard in Portugal, seeking to establish their own private oasis, the atmosphere shifts. The initial camaraderie starts to dim as the fervent rhetoric of the group’s leader, Harry, takes on a menacing tone.
The situation escalates when a couple of deaths occur, leading the more impressionable members of the assembly to declare their unwavering allegiance to Harry. In this turbulent environment, Sherry, alongside the skeptical fellow SPARKS member Mad Ax, begins to unveil the unsettling truth about the group. What initially appeared as a haven of acceptance soon reveals itself as a cleverly disguised recruitment tool, meticulously crafted to further the twisted ideologies of their dangerously charismatic leader.
As Sherry grapples with her beliefs and the reality of her surroundings, the film holds up a mirror to the ideals of youth rebellion versus the darker undertones of manipulation, leaving viewers to ponder the true cost of belonging and the fine line between idealism and fanaticism.
