Sylvia outlines a plan to fund her own art gallery with Carl's help. They stash two briefcases of cash around the house: one in the basement and one in a bedroom closet, and Sylvia deposits the cash into a safe. This preparation takes place before Mark returns home for the evening.

That evening, Sylvia hosts a dinner with Mark's colleague Sean and Sean's girlfriend Christina. The atmosphere is pleasant on the surface, but Sean's rudeness introduces awkwardness that lingers through the night. The gathering slowly becomes uneasy as the night progresses.

John arrives claiming to be a neighbor and a consultant and is initially turned away. He compliments Sylvia's taste and offers an expensive bottle of wine, which earns him an invitation to stay. He quickly ingratiates himself with the group.

Joining the garden party, John reveals he knows about the espionage and the five million cash payoff, along with intimate personal details. He threatens them with a gun and demands the money be brought to him, while Christina retrieves the briefcase and takes a small stack of bills. When Sean protests, John cuts off Sean's index finger before Christina pepper-sprays him and knocks him out.

The group restrains John, tying him to a chair, and debates what to do next. Sylvia advocates releasing him to split the money, while Sean argues they should kill him to prevent future trouble. The tension in the room grows as they consider their options.

Mark privately confesses to Sylvia that they have been living beyond their means and their investments are lost, leaving them near bankruptcy. Sean's cocaine habit grows more evident and his impulsiveness fuels suspicion toward John; meanwhile John begins manipulating Christina to untie him.

John manipulates Christina into untying him and stokes Sean's anger, provoking Sean to attempt torture. John retaliates and knocks Sean unconscious, deepening the group’s fear and mistrust. The balance of power in the room shifts dramatically.

Mark secretly gives John an incorrect code to his safe, asserting the cash is protected by a time lock that won't open for eight hours. John attacks Mark with the pistol butt and knocks him out, seizing control of the scene. The threat level remains high as the others realize the danger is far from over.

Mark awakens chained to a cinder block on a dock by the pond, and John dangles him there to pressure him. After nearly drowning, Mark agrees to John's demands but insists the safe cannot be opened until morning. John relents and locks him in the basement.

In the morning, Carl arrives and Mark urges him to rescue Sylvia and Christina. John takes Mark to unlock the safe, talks briefly with Sylvia while Christina sleeps, then leaves with the money and the briefcase from downstairs. He tells the hostages to give a false physical description to the police as they part ways.

Sylvia packs a bag and tells Mark she is divorcing him, signaling a definitive break from their tumultuous marriage. John escapes to a barn with a motorbike and departs with one briefcase of money, leaving the other stuffed with books and mildly amused by the turn of events.

Sylvia meets with Carl and offers him a share of the money, but he happily declines, preferring to stay out of the criminal fallout. The moment underscores Carl's role as pragmatic confidant rather than participant.

John drives away with half of the money, leaving behind the other half in his own pack and a sense of foreboding. The contrast between cash and the checked pastimes he left behind is a recurring irony.

The film ends with Sylvia and John driving away in separate directions, each carrying two and a half million dollars. Their diverging paths emphasize the costs of deception and the fragile balance of the couple's life.
